Phil Ranelin’s “WHO IS ERIC DOLPHY?

This is the first of eight Jazz Appreciation Workshops by master trombonist Phil Ranelin. This workshop will feature memorabilia, recordings, videos and oral histories from friends, fans and fellow musicians of the legendary multi-reed virtuoso, Eric Dolphy, born in Los Angeles on June 20th (1928), which has been declared Eric Dolphy Day, henceforth, throughout the City and County of Los Angeles and throughout the State of California. The workshop will take place:

This Jazz Appreciation Workshop is free and open to the public and is made possible in part by a Cultural Arts Grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs’ Artist-In-Residence 2006-2007 Program. Phil Ranelin will present eight Jazz Appreciation Workshops in The Honorable Herb J. Wesson, Jr.’s 10th Councilmanic District. These workshops are a collaborative project, co-sponsored by Los Angeles Public Libraries (Washington Irving and Baldwin Hills Branches), Friends of the Washington Irving Library, Friends of the Baldwin Hills Library, L.A. Black Business Expo ’06, BUILD CRENSHAW ARTS, C.O.R.E.-CA, St. Elmo’s Village, William Grant Still Arts Center, Eric A. and Sadie C. Dolphy Living Trust, California Artist Coalition of Los Angeles (CACLA), Sisters of Jazz, Thurman Green Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA) Foundation, David Ornette Cherry, Rose Gales, the Harold Land family and the Horace Tapscott family.
